Previous to listing the 7 steps on steps to start a window cleaning small business below, I'd like to first say that I will assume you know you need to register a business name (preferably with the term " window service" or " window washing service" in the name). OK... let's move on... 1. Image - In order to build your window cleaning business how you want to grow this, you MUST establish a top-notch image. There are window cleaners all around us that look "average". They show up to complete a window washing estimate and they look like they just rolled out of bed. Put yourself in any prospect's shoes. 3 window cleaners arrive to provide 'em the estimate. Only one of them (hopefully you) is at company uniform (polo shirt/logo) and presents an excellent estimate presentation package (sources, cover letter, etc.) with a composed estimate (most window cleaners provide verbal estimates with no references). Who do you think the candidate will choose to fresh their windows. Um... let me think. YOU! 2. Market - Do a number of initial research into your target market of prospects and what subdivisions/areas their current address. My markets were normally higher income homeowners and also retirees. Then distribute flyers into these areas. Flyers are cheap plus they generate activity, calls, and jobs. You can expect on average about a 1% returning, so don't just create 100 flyers and think you're fine. Sorry. It doesn't work like this. You can eventually reinvest directly into postcards to automate more of this marketing. 3. Market... Again! - This is truly what separates the successful window cleaners from the not so successful window cleansing agents. You need to certainly repeat your marketing efforts towards the SAME prospects continuously. Repeat, consistent flyer distributions, postcard mailings, etc., is what will make your business and window cleaning purchaser base skyrocket. The first time someone sees your flyer, they say "oh hum, who are you? " The next period they see your flyer, now they know your small business. The 3rd time these people see your flyer, they begin to believe in you. And now is about the time they'll call you as long as they need their windows washed. And it gets better and better each time you market to them. Sure... you'll get calls the first flyer distribution you complete, but it'll be the weakest response. It goes up via there. Hot Tip: When I first started marketing to a area/subdivision, I would do it once every several weeks to this same subdivision for that first 3 months. No exceptions! At the end with this 3 months, you'll be well regarded in these particular subdivisions and you will have plenty of jobs on your calendar. 4. Reliability - When you and a customer agree to a position time, be on time. Elementary and I shouldn't have even to mention it, but unfortunately I carry out. And if you're jogging late, call the customer. No one likes to hold back. So it's a wonderful means to make the wrong impression when you're late. Do it too often and you'll see your current customer base start dwindling. 5. Get Insured - I saw a video on Youtube a few days ago where this window cleaner recommended you do not carry insurance. His reasoning? It's too expensive. That is the dumbest matter I've heard in a very long time. You're exposing yourself as well as your company w/o the proper coverage. If you're in your window cleaning business with the long haul, then why risk everthing? But you also need to understand that you can charge more if you're insured. So the insurance premiums are covered by the extra income you'll make. At the end of the estimate presentation I designed to a prospect, I always said: Oh by the technique, I'm fully insured along with bonded. 6. Be thorough - I understand window cleaners who will not open up the windows that they can be cleaning. In my opinion these window cleaners will not be doing a complete and thorough window cleaning employment. A window cleaning service has to consist of cleaning the actual glass, tracks, frames, sills, screens, etc. If any one these are not done, then what's the point? No sense having clear glass and dirty screens, right? 7. Communicate - The window cleaning business can be a repeat business. That's what makes it the perfect business. BUT you have to treat it as such. Don't "forget" about your web visitors after the job is completed and you have your money. First, you should always mail them a "thank you" letter every day or two after the project is done. And next you ought to stay in touch over summer and winter by sending greeting playing cards regularly. Too much work you say? Maybe. But every single time w/o fail which i sent out a batch of greeting cards to my customers, I walked away having exceptional profits. So... is worth it? Yeah... I think so. Repeat 1 through 7 again and again, and when they produce a Hall of Fame intended for window cleaners, you'll be in this. It'll take you from the so-so, average window cleaning business into a successful, extremely profitable business that you will be proud to call your individual.
